38. When Buddha's time on earth was about coming to a close, he,

"foreseeing the things that would happen in future times," said to his disciple Ananda: "Ananda, when I am gone, you must not think there is no Buddha; the _discourses_ I have delivered, and the _precepts_ I have enjoined, _must be my successors_, or representatives, and be to you as Buddha."[295:3]
