A turner at Glasgow from age of 15; imagined that he was persecuted and always watched by order of the Tories; came to London and near the Salopian coffee house, Charing Cross, fired twice at and killed Edward Drummond private sec. to sir Robert Peel, mistaking him for the baronet, 20 Jany. 1843; tried at central criminal court 3 March 1843 and acquitted as being insane; confined in Bedlam, then removed to criminal lunatic asylum, Broadmoor, where he _died_ 3 May 1865, inquest held same day, verdict death from natural causes. _W.
