163. BENEDETTO MARCELLO. _Writer and Musician._

[Born at Venice, 1686. Died at Brescia, in Italy, 1739. Aged 53.] A lawyer and public officer; he was also a distinguished poet, and a musical composer of a high order. His most celebrated work is a Paraphrase of the first fifty Psalms, arranged for one, two, three, or four voices; it is remarkable for great tenderness, united with the religious feeling, and vehemence of style, which have obtained for the author from his fond countrymen the appellation of the Pindar and Michael Angelo of musicians. He also composed sonnets, madrigals, and dramatic pieces. [By Domenico Manera.]
