403. ROBERT VERNON. _Patron of Art._

[Born 1774. Died in London, 1849. Aged 75.] A benefactor to his country, who amassed a fortune in business, and expended his wealth in the formation of a gallery of pictures by British artists. Whilst living, he proved himself the benefactor of struggling genius. Dying, he bequeathed his works of art to the nation. His pictures are now collected at Marlborough House, where they form “The Vernon Gallery.” [By W. Behnes.]
